Red Dot on Pistol
The shift to optics-ready pistols. The biggest handgun technique change of the last decade.
The **pistol red dot** is a miniature reflex sight mounted directly to a handgun slide, replacing or supplementing the iron sights. It is the single biggest technique and equipment shift in American defensive handgun in the last decade.
The benefits: a single focal plane (the shooter focuses on the target through the dot, not on the front sight), faster target acquisition under stress, and meaningfully better accuracy at distance. Most trained shooters shoot a pistol red dot meaningfully better than iron sights within a few hundred rounds of acclimation.
The costs: a learning curve, increased carry profile, potential for dot loss in low-light or extreme angles, and the need for reliable batteries and a durable optic. The baseline optic is now the **Trijicon RMR**, **Holosun 507C**, or **Aimpoint ACRO**. Most modern defensive pistols ship optics-ready, and most modern defensive training programs incorporate optics from day one.
