Cartridge
.22 LR
The rimfire cartridge everyone learns on. Cheap, quiet, endlessly useful.
See tag in graph →**.22 Long Rifle** is the most-produced cartridge in the world. It's the round every American shooter learned on and the round that every American shooter still trains with — at least, every one who cares about trigger time per dollar.
The value proposition is unchanged in a century: low cost, almost no recoil, enough accuracy for squirrels and steel out to 100 yards, and enough noise reduction (especially suppressed) to shoot in a backyard where legal. It is the only centerfire skill-training substitute worth the name.
It's also the primary cartridge of NRL22, small-bore Olympic disciplines, and most rimfire precision competition. A capable .22 rifle and a good bulk brick of ammunition is the single best training investment most new shooters can make.
