Can a flannel shirt work for winter AIWB?
Minnesota winter carrier. Currently using strong-side OWB under a heavy coat, but interested in switching to AIWB for the faster draw. Can a flannel overshirt cover a G19 well enough, or do I need a dedicated concealment garment?

Flannel works great for winter AIWB. Several reasons:
**Flannel is structured.** It hangs rather than drapes, which means it doesn't cling to the grip of the pistol the way a T-shirt does. A tucked-in T-shirt with a flannel overshirt is a combination you see on a lot of trained carriers for exactly this reason.
**Flannel has visual texture.** Plaid, pattern, wool weave — they break up outlines better than solid colors. The grip of a concealed pistol shows up much less under a pattern than under a solid shirt.
**Winter works in your favor.** Everyone's wearing more layers. A concealed pistol under a flannel under a vest under a jacket is effectively invisible.
Practical notes:
- Go up one size on the flannel. Not baggy, just loose enough that motion doesn't pull it tight against the pistol. - A claw or wedge on your AIWB holster matters more than the shirt — it tucks the grip toward your body and prevents printing. - A proper gun belt is non-negotiable. A heavy winter pistol on a fashion belt will print regardless of shirt choice.
For a G19 with a claw holster, quality gun belt, and a size-up flannel — you are effectively invisible in most winter environments. Dedicated concealment garments are great but they are not necessary for winter AIWB. A flannel you already own is.
