Platform

AK-47

Mikhail Kalashnikov's 1947 service rifle. Simple, durable, ubiquitous.

The **AK-47** (and its huge family of variants — AKM, AK-74, AK-103, and western clones) is the second most widely distributed rifle platform in the world after the AR-15 and arguably the most produced firearm design of the 20th century. Its appeal is not precision. It is durability, tolerance for neglect, and a mechanical simplicity that makes it almost impossible to break with an empty toolbox. For civilian American shooters it's a niche platform compared to the AR-15 — ammunition is more expensive, parts are harder to source, and the ergonomics are genuinely worse — but the platform has a dedicated following for good reasons. Buy a reputable builder (Arsenal, PSAK, Zastava, Kalashnikov USA, properly-converted imports) and understand that cheap AKs are often genuinely bad. The platform is hard to break; it is not hard to build badly.
